“All the hallmarks of a great “Rite” were here, including the contrast of crashing and soft (as in the otherworldly introduction to the second part) without ever losing a fundamental pulse.” New York Times

SONOS performed Stravinsky’s monumental Le Sacre du Printemps in June 2013 at (le) poisson rouge in New York City. After the first concert SOLD OUT, we were asked to perform Le Sacre again, on the same evening!

Seann Alderking created a superb reduction of The Rite of Spring for four pianos and two percussionists, the clarity of rhythms and harmonies were unmistakable.

We had a dream team of pianists: Saar Ahuvia, Stephanie Ho, Jenny Lin and Stephen Gosling and our suave yet bombastic percussionists were Matt Smallcomb and Jared Soldiviero!

Extremely pleased to get a such a great first review in the New York Times! We all enjoyed ourselves.

    SONOS at the Palace

SONOS accompanied the 1920 Harold Lloyd Silent film short His Royal Slyness during an open house at the beautiful 1929 movie theater, the United Palace Theater. As the Palace theater seats 3,400 people, it is the fourth largest theater in Manhattan and is located at 175th and Broadway in Washington Heights.

In association with the Harold Lloyd estate, our performance happened to coincide with the release of the restored DVD/BluRay. Read more on website’s “Past Seasons” tab.

    Hip Hop Nutcracker

What do you get when a classical chamber orchestra performs a holiday classic like Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, but you take the story uptown into Washington Heights; transform the ballet corps into 12 hip hop dancers; add some improvisational elements like an electric violinist and a DJ?

This holiday season SONOS embarks on perhaps its most ambitious project yet which is a collaboration with the United Palace of Cultural Arts and Decadance Theater Company.

Mounting the show is a quadruple win. First, it introduces the timeless music to our Washington Heights community, a large part of which is unfamiliar with this holiday chestnut. Second, it permits us to showcase children from the United Palace of Cultural Arts community art programs. Students in our youth orchestras, circus arts program, hip hop dance class, and West African drumming ensemble will all perform in the production. Third, it puts the SONOS name out there, while putting the United Palace and Washington Heights on the map as a cultura destination. Lastly, it has the potential of creating an annual revenue stream for SONOS as it is a co-producer/investor in this production!

We hope you will consider making an extra special donation this year to get this project off the ground, AND please save the date of December 7!

We have created our first Indiegogo campaign to crowd source the remaining $40,000 needed.

    Donate and spread the word!

    Fund raising is
    Misunderstood

"I have to donate BIG $$$ to make it worthwhile."
    WRONG!!

    “They survive just fine
    without my support.”
    WRONG!!

    NO Donation is TOO small.

“We are a broadly based publicly supported charity: we accept donations of ALL amounts”

    In Memoriam

On March 4, 2014, Ruth Unger, a long time supporter and friend of SONOS, passed away. She loved to reminisce about having heard this orchestra and that conductor! Her passion for classical music stayed with her to the end.

She generously bequeathed $20,000 to the orchestra. This money has been designated to commission and perform a new Concerto for Two Pianos and Chamber Orchestra based on themes of Jean Sibelius. Premiering in the 2015-2016 season, it will honor the 150th anniversary of the Finnish composer’s birth. Swedish composer Fredrik Sixten, whose Requiem SONOS performed in 2012, will compose the new piece.

“I am continually impressed by the earnestness and dedication of so many of the SONOS musicians. I recognize so many familiar faces from concert to concert.”
